AFC Crewe fell to a 3-1 away defeat to promotion rivals FC Hanley in a game that had a bit of everything. Unfortunately for our boys in red, the only thing missing was points on the board - but there was plenty to be optimistic about, especially in the first half.

That first 45 minutes saw our lads create several chances, and were it not for a couple of slices of misfortune, we would have gone into the break at least one goal up. Efforts from Joe Booth, Fortune Sibanda, Caine Mellor and Tosin Makinde all went close, but the winds of fate were not blowing our way as Hanley somehow found themselves tucking into their half-time oranges still in the game.

That half-time break came at the worst possible moment for us however, as the game settled in the early stages of the second half before our goalie Alex Atton was awarded a straight red card following a challenge on a Hanley player outside the box. That forced Zak Hill to take a turn between the sticks and put the team on the back foot. Unlike many of our red cards last season however, there can really be no complaints on this occasion, and we hope that both players are okay after that heavy clash. We also hope that Brandon Powner recovers quickly from the back injury he sustained in the second half.

It was therefore only a matter of time before our luck ran out; Hanley's forward Nathan Jones added their opener before AFC Crewe gave us a moment of false hope, Ross Avies teeing up Fortune Sibanda in the 76th minute for a fine turn and finish. It was probably the most incisive we had been since half-time and was a really well-worked goal. Go check it out on the Veo, it's worth a look.

Sadly the numbers game eventually told, and Hanley added further goals on 85 and 90 to complete a win that didn't feel likely as we beat their door down in the first 45. Manager Keiran Mear updated Board members via Discord after the game and it's safe to say both the players and the Board cannot wait to see the lads step out onto the pitch next week.

The Keiran Mear era began with an exciting 2-1 victory over an outstanding AFC Norton side, as AFC Crewe began the 2025/26 season with three valuable points at Wood Park.

After a first half that saw relatively few chances created by the home side, and some tentative football played out in front of our fully-working Veo and raucous support from the sidelines, our boys went in at the break 1-0 down thanks to a fine goal that came from one of Norton's exceptionally annoying long throws down the left-hand side, with the cross coming in to set up a free header around the 35min mark. 

With just the one shot from new recruit Josh Mackintosh and a couple of headers from captain Jordan Long, it was down to new keeper Alex Atton to keep our lads in the game, which he did with one excellent save and doing enough to force another Norton forward to shoot wide when it was easier to score. A one goal half-time deficit was potentially a touch harsh on AFC Crewe, but the lads can have few complaints as they headed to the dressing room to hear from the gaffer.

Whatever was said at half-time, it definitely worked; after seeing another Norton chance go begging, three changes were made that absolutely turned the tide of the game. New signings Ben Hewitt, Harvey Collins and Courtney Franklyn came on and the fresh legs really made a difference, especially when the three were joined by long-time AFC Crewe stalwarts Ross Avies and Fortune Sibanda. After two more Norton chances - including a fantastic save by our goalie again - it was finally our turn to show our quality.

Having suffered at the hands of Norton's long throws all game, it was their turn to suffer from ours, as Courtney Franklyn's beamer was flicked on by captain Longy and tucked away by Ben, securing a debut goal and a valuable equaliser that visibly deflated a Norton side that must have felt they had done enough to have the game wrapped up by that point.

It was all AFC Crewe from that point on though, as Fortune Sibanda was expertly denied by Norton's goalie, Caine Mellor was kept out, and then captain Jordan Long led by example to fire home his first of the season and secure three hugely impressive points for us. Another late chance for Ben was kept out, and finally the whistle went - AFC Crewe ran out 2-1 victors, and our lads got their just rewards for keeping on chugging.

Now the curtain has closed on the 2024/25 season for our men’s and women’s teams, the Club can now confirm the players who will be departing. 

From our women's team, Darcie Tennant, Anabelle Medley, Issy Brand, Lucy Tam, Menna Shirras, Pixi Boo Nickless-Mooney and Katie Mallett time's at AFC Crewe is over, as university, work, or relocation deprives us of their services for next season.

Lancaster University Trio Darcie, Anabelle and Menna have brought an unreal level of skill and technical ability to the team in their respective positions, in no small part due to their futsal background. Absolute ballers! 

Issy Brand, Goalkeeper and Captain extraordinaire, has lead the team with passion, personality and enthusiasm, all whilst being an absolute worldie of a keeper.

Find us a better attacking full back than Lucy Tam! And whilst you're at it, show us a player who can cover that back line as quick and composed as Pixi could! We'll wait... 

Finally, shoutout to Katie, who despite a persistent knee injury, would show up no matter what! 

Since the inception of our Women's team two seasons ago, these players have been instrumental in getting us where we are today. We couldn't have done it without you.


AFC Crewe announce women's departures for 2024/25

Now the curtain has closed on the 2024/25 season for our men’s and women’s teams, the Club can now confirm the players who will be departing. 

From our Men’s team, Joe Jones, Aiden Brown, George Taylor-Fletcher, Jacob Brooks and Daniel Millington will be leaving the club. 

Joe Jones leaves to take up a scholarship in the US as of this summer. We wish him well state-side and he's welcome back any time. 

Aiden Brown departs after scoring 20 goals for the Club across the last two seasons, playing a key part in last year's double success.

George Taylor-Fletcher's first season in men's football has been a resounding success, and we look forward to what he does next in the game! We're sure we'll be seeing his name around the Football League in years to come. Huge thanks, too, for playing through injury for many months of the season to fight for the cause.

Jacob had already agreed to join Burscough Town closer to home, while Daniel departs after half a season with the club.
